Behavior Guidance Policy

To aid the children in development of self-discipline and mutual respect of a democratic environment, the following concept should be incorporated and encouraged daily: respect for self, respect for others, and respect for materials/environment. We encourage these concepts by providing an atmosphere which:

  • Accepts each child as a unique and special individual
  • Sets realistic expectations
  • Provides an environment based on fairness
  • Provides children with opportunities to succeed
  • Provides security, limits, boundaries
  • Provides opportunities for positive encouragement
  • Encourage decision-making
  • Provides friendship
  • Provides an environment the child can depend on

When the ground rules are not followed, we redirect unacceptable behavior

Persistent Unacceptable Behavior

After attempting to redirect unacceptable behavior and the protection and safety of staff and children are an issue, the following procedures must be taken:

  • The staff must observe and record the child's behavior and the staff response to the behavior
  • The staff will develop a plan to address the behavior with the child's parents and with other staff and professionals when necessary. The Director and Administrator will also be available for consultation.

THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS ARE PROHIBITED:

  • Corporal punishment: rough handling, shoving, hair pulling, ear pulling, shaking, slapping, kicking, biting, pinching, hitting, and or spanking
  • Emotional abuse: name calling, ostracism, shaming, derogatory remarks, language that threatens humiliation or frightening the child
  • Separation from the group: no separation from the group with the following exceptions: The staff person has tried less intrusive methods of redirecting the child's behavior which have been ineffective, and the behavior threatens the safety and well being of the other children
  • Punishment for lapses in toilet habits
  • Withholding food, light, warmth, clothing, or medical care as punishment
  • The use of physical restraint other than to physically hold a child when containment is necessary to protect a child or others from harm
  • The use of mechanical restraints, such as tying
